Uttarakhand Disaster

The June 2013 flash floods in Uttarakhand have taken a tremendous toll and more than 4,000 villages across the 13 districts affected very badly. In addition to the massive loss of life, it has resulted in severe destruction of property. Massive landslides have destroyed roads and bridges making them inaccessible to transport relief and succor to the thousands left homeless, with no food, no medical aid and in many cases without shelter

Besides livelihood of the people residing in the flash flood affected districts have completely been obliterated. Agriculture is a source of livelihood for a majority of the population and has also suffered debilitating consequences in the wake of the disaster.

Heavy rains from 14 to 17 June caused rivers in Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli and Tehri districts in Uttarakhand state to overflow. This triggered flooding and landslides. More than 5000 people are predicted to have been killed and 75,000 people are stranded.

As per the initial assessment, the immediate needs are: Drinking water, Food items, GI Sheets, plastic sheets, solar lights, restoration of road and communication links, warm clothing, Medicines, Sanitary kits and disposal of the dead (both human & animal).

The state of Uttarakhand struck with disaster on 14th -17th June 2013. This triggered devastating flashflood and landslides resulting annihilation of villages and settlements. River Ganges and its major tributaries like Alaknanda, Mandakini and Bhagirathi have swelled up, which ravage the State. Public infrastructures such as bridges, hanging bridges, foot bridges, national highways, dwelling houses and commercial structures etc. have been swallowed by the flood and landslides. Most of the villages especially from Rudraprayag, Uttarkashi and Chamoli districts are still become inaccessible and suffering from lack of potable water, food scarcity and other basic necessities. Life and livelihood of villagers is badly affected in these districts. Transformation of life and livelihood of people now become challenge for the Government and Community based organization/Non-Government organizations.
